[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea's leading entertainment companies have lost more than KRW 8 trillion (approximately US$5.8 billion) in combined market value this year as investor sentiment toward the sector weakened despite a strong rally in the broader stock market.
According to the Korea Exchange (KRX), the combined market capitalization of HYBE, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment stood at KRW 12.98 trillion as of July 16, down KRW 8.04 trillion from KRW 21.02 trillion at the end of last year.
SM Entertainment recorded the steepest decline, with its market value falling 48.8%, followed by YG Entertainment (-42.1%), HYBE (-36.0%), and JYP Entertainment (-35.7%).
The group's average share price has declined 40.9% this year, sharply underperforming the KOSPI, which gained 61.9%over the same period.
Analysts said enthusiasm surrounding BTS's comeback earlier this year faded after the event concluded, while investors have become increasingly concerned about the lack of a new global intellectual property (IP) capable of matching the group's commercial success. At the same time, investment funds have shifted toward AI-related semiconductor stocks, further weighing on entertainment shares.
Market analysts said concerns over slowing earnings growth after BTS's current global activities conclude have also contributed to the sector's prolonged weakness.
